Semi-detached and end of terrace houses loft conversions
For this style of property, it is generally a hip to gable loft conversion with a rear dormer. By in large this can be carried out under permitted development, once the design meets the space and size regulations. We have designed and converted many semi-detached properties and end of terrace houses maximising space in the roof to created new bedrooms, bathrooms and office space.
Example drawing of proposed loft
Hip to gable left-hand side loft conversion
For a hip to gable loft conversion the hip is replaced with a new gable wall and the existing roofline is extended to meet it and in this case the staircase is on the left-hand side of the property. The gable wall is usually built up in brick or rendered or pebble dashed to match the existing gable wall. Once the new roof is built then a rear dormer is built onto the property. A hip to gable extension will require the rear roof to be removed to extend the new gable wall. In the dormer there is a possibility to add large windows, French doors and or a Julliette balcony.
Hip to gable right-hand side loft conversion
A hip to gable loft conversion is a great way to add significant space to your end of terrace or semi-detached property. It creates a significant amount of space sideways with the sloped roof and then to the rear with the dormer; in this case the stairs is on the right hand side of the property. Alongside the Juliette balcony and French doors to one side, large Velux windows can be added to the sloping roof side. This makes the whole space bright and enhance the feeling of space in the conversion. In most cases you can get once very large bedroom with ensuite and a children’s bedroom, or two bedrooms.
Hip to gable L-shaped loft conversion
We carry out a lot of L-shaped loft conversions, in particular on end of terrace houses in London. This is a great way to maximise the space in the loft with the L-shape extending out over the lower extended part to the rear of the property. A hip to gable loft conversion generally comes under permitted development. The process is usually that once designs are finalised we submit an application for lawful development so that we have documentation to prove the design and build is compliant with the schemes regulations and is legal.
